Hey folks, Stan Whitaker here. Just wanted to let you all know about this new project of ours. If you can imagine a funkier, freer version of HTM that's what Oblivion Sun is all about. We've worked up a number of toons that would've been on the next HTM cd but them boys are just a bit too difficult to hook up with. We were quite schedule and geographically challenged to say the least.
Frank and I formed this band over a year ago under the name Pedal Giant Animals (which will still be released as a cd one fine day) which has since evolved into Oblivion Sun. There's more vocals and more guitar so I'm having more fun than I have in many years. Lots more improvisation which I'm loving!!! HTM had absolutely no room for improv and I've REALLY missed that side of music. I gets to flail with this band!
We've got a really great rhythm section with Chris Mack on drums (Illuvitar and Pedal Giant Animals) and Dave DeMarco on bass (credits too numerous to mention:-)! Some of you may know of Bill Plummer as HTM's soundman of many years and his reputation as an amazing engineer, but Bill is a heck of a keyboardist. His mini-moog playing especially is very Kit-like and Jan Hammerish. Some of you may remember an eclectic cover band in the early 90's called Avalon that Bill and I formed. Not your standard 'club-fare'. (we did King Crimson, Pink Floyd, lots of Jeff Beck and an entire set of Peter Gabriel toons!)
Oblivion Sun really is a smokin' band and one that I'm very proud of and excited about; at times attaining that old magic and sounding more like HTM than the most recent incarnation ever did! We even worked up one really old HTM toon for the upcoming show that should be a nice surprise for the hardcore HTM fans. You'll have to come to the show to find out which one!
Unlike HTM, we ENCOURAGE taping at our shows as no two shows will be quite alike due to the improv element. Come see us at Orion May 14th at 7p.m. for our debut performance. Hope to see you there!
