I guess so. They recently released a compilation triple-CD (Platinum Collection) as well as a DVD (The Video Show), both remixed and remastered. I believe they are meant to introduce the serial of 5.1 remasters of the complete discography, but when it takes so long as it took before the The Lamb was ready, we'll be all old and grey ("too old to rock and roll") when the serial is completed.

...but "too young to die." Yes, the Lamb has taken a bloody long time to mix, it should have been finnished last year when it was the 30 years annivarsary for the Lamb. I can imagine that the band and Peter Gabriel want it to be simply perfect. I listened to the Lamb show from Archives 1967-75 yesterday and there are so many amasing tunes and its so great to hear Phil Collins playing jazz-rock beats in a symphonic rockband and it fits so damn good.

PG had shot down the first 5.1 mix of the Lamb. He had every right to do so. I'm glad all have agreed on the new mix and TLLDOB can be finally heard in 5.1 SACD.

"I got sunshine in my stomach..." no that not true, I did get a feeling in my stomach that Peter Gabriel was very involved in the Lamb 5.1 release if this information is correct. IMO its one of the best symphrock albums out there.

Off topic (sort of but just a reflection) I have always wondered how A Trick Of The Tail would sound with Peter Gabriel on the vocals. Would it be more of a Genesis classic?, better?, different music? And so on... Does anyone know if Peter Gabriel still was in the band when material where written for ATOTT?

In the wonderful book "The Evolution Of A Rock Band : Genesis" from photographer Armando Gallo, Mike Rutherford says after Peter had left the band: "We had two months off, and then we met, saying "Let's try and we'll see what happens." "Steve wasn't there the first three days of rehearsal, he was doing his solo album ("Voyage of the acolyte" - lab.), and we sat down and in the first three day we started playing "Squonk". Mike remembers that they were writing ATOTT in about a month, while the press didn't know officially that Gabriel was out. So I think it's clear Gabriel was out of the band by the time the album was written. I also think it would have been a very different album if he would have been in the band, if there would have been one at all. Gabriel was struggling quite a lot, partly because the birth of his daughter Anna had been a traumatic experience. So when they would have made an album it would have been much darker than The Trick, which is a beautiful, gentle recording in my ears, with both fun and serious moments.

Yes, I like that album too, its a great follow up album as well and a great introduction for Phil as the main singer. I believe they tested a great amount (Ive heard "hundreds") of singers before they decided to go with Phil in the end. He does the job as a singer (and drummer off course) perfectly. ATOTT feels a bit more straight forward in some tunes but I can hear fragments of it on TLLDOB so...that was their progress at the time anyway it seems. A darker album would have fitted me well also, I have a tendency to hear the beauty in dark and melancolic music more than in happy ones, dont know why but thats how it works for me. Dance On A Volcano and Robbery, Assault & Battery are my favourite pieces on the album.

Mine are Entangled, Mad Man Moon and Ripples... (indeed the ballads), but also Robbery and course Los Endos. But speaking of dark and beauty, I like Wind And Wuthering even more; it's my favourite Genesis-album, partly I think because it was the first one I bought (although I knew a couple of others through my brother), but also because I was so happy to see the band live in 1977! It was just before Steve Hackett left the band, so I more or less saw the show that ended up on Seconds Out. For a very long time it was my best concert ever, untill I went to the States and saw some Happy men

- Oh it seems that we like very much the same when it comes to Genesis, because I also think that Wind and Wuthering is a better album than ATOTT. The foggy autumn cover with the birdfilled tree becomes a very good hint on the music i think. Music goes very much in the darker moods with the very moody and beautiful Blood On The Rooftops that I feel as the darkest moment on the album. Favourites are Eleventh Earl Of Mar, a great uptempo symphrock tune that are all Genesis in every aspect. Wot Gorilla?, All In A Mouse's Night and Blood On The Rooftops are other favourites. This was not the first Genesis Ive "heard" but the first that I bought to my "at the time" very tiny symphonic rock collection.

Some complainers about how long it took to produce this should read some interviews with Ken Scott on 5.1 production. It's alot more complicated that one might think. Having listened to Peter Gabriel's 'shaking the tree' SACD remaster, I might question whether Peter has the hearing required to make good sound or judge the first attempt at the 5.1 production. Not that the remaster is bad, but I expected more. PG's UP production just sucks. The idea that you can record 256 tracks digital asynchorously over 4 years and then mix and splice is just BS. The live "Growing Up" DVD has better sound wit great synchronicity and simplicity. The previous work of Ken Scott and Alan Parsons should be the reference for production, even if it was analog. SACD DSD finally means digital can represent analog, but computers do not mean one knows how to put it together. Not SACD, but the remasters of Foxtrot, Nursery Crime and Trespass made significant gains in sound quality and listening pleasure.

According this list Trick Of The Tail will even be released sooner on SACD than TLLDOB....

Im not familiar to Gabriels solo stuff so I cant say anything about it, but I can understand that he wants to be a part of the 5.1 mixing just for the reason that its a very important album for the fans and Peter himself I guess, so we shall only hope they make a good thing out of it in the end. ;D

Yeah, Ghostland is a great site. It is run by one of the organizers of the NEARfest (small world, isn't it?). I found it by accident. I had bought an album from a and called Ghostland and wanted to search for more information. Then I found this site.

From Gabriel I've got a couple of remasters and when I got my SA-player I bought two SACD's (4 and Passion - which is now playing). Both are stereo-CD's; I was first quite unknown with the whole SA-thing and thought all CD's were multi-channel, so I was first a bit disappointed, but now I like the sound very much. I also bought UP as a SACD, which is multi-channel. Personally I like the mix, but maybe Firth listens in a different way to music or has better ears or is more experienced with multi-channel. I also have to admit that I haven't heard it very often, due to the fact that I listened to the "normal" version quite often. I like what he did with the spherical sounds though; they seem to surround you and creep on you in a very unexpected manner. I'll give it a closer, more critical listen soon.

I just rented King Crimson's DVD Vrroom which is in Dolby Digital 5.1. Very good exploitation of the multichannel medium, but not the utmost in sound quality. Reflections of cymbals can be heard in the rear channel. Not the best video quality, but the content is extraordinary, if you like KC.

Glad to hear that the UP SACD is good in multichannel. This is not surprising since the weakness of the UP 2 channel CD likely comes from having to project so many (256 I heard) channels of recording on to 2 channels. "Growing UP" the DVD benefits from multichannel.

Strange thing happened with another DVD from KC, Neal and Jack and Me. The first video on it, Three Of A Perfect Pair - Live In Japan 1984, gives you the possibility to listen it in 5.1, but it doesn't work. According to Robert Fripp they made a mistake in the factory (I guess people got fired). Too bad.

I know this is about the Lamb, but a link brought me to an announcement about the completion of the 5.1 SACD of Nursery Cryme and beginning work on Foxtrot : www.genesis-music.com/newsgenesis.htm#Cryme. A quote: Nick was tweaking his remix of 'The Musical Box'. The 5.1 mix sounded extraordinarily powerful with elements emerging from the background that had only previously been hinted at. It sounded like a major sonic leap forward from the 94 re-masters with a far greater dynamic range and clarity.

Yeah, seems that they working alot with all those ol´ remasters these days wich i think is great. I have Nursery Cryme on LP only so...to me thats great news and its a very good album so..........looking forward to that one too. Hopefully a heaven for all audiophiles out there .......and me!
